The Most Expensive Keyboard
Sunday, July 23, 2006
The Maltron keyboard is tagged as the most expensive and the strangest keyboard around. With this around you can enhance your typing speed with approximately 20% of your current speed, thanks to its unique design that uses all the 10 fingers unlike the usual keyboards that use just 8 fingers.
The Maltron keyboard uses the best of technology including the Cherry MX switches which re considered the best. Apart from this, this one is also helpful in keeping the repetitive stress injuries at bay, thanks to the Cherry MX keys, which reduces the constant pounding need to half, and the user does not have to press the keys into the base of the keyboard, thus reducing the physical stress levels.
Price : 490$

I kinda like it. Where's the space bar, though?
I think the space is on one of the thumb keys. I actually have a book from 1986 that talks about the Maltron. These keyboards have been around for a while (yes, even longer than their circa 1994 website). The one pictured has a qwerty layout, but they'd also got a "Maltron" layout which (they claim) is more ergonomic as well as a Dvorak layout.
A lot of my co-workers have Kinesis keyboards, which are very similar. Maltrons seem to be a bit more expensive, but they also have real keys for the function keys (the Kinesis keyboards have calculator style "rubber chicklet" function keys) and the Maltron also has a numeric keypad.
I tried using a Kinesis, but gave up after a few weeks. If you can get used to it these keyboards are really fast, and supposedly very easy on the wrists, but getting used to them is really hard.
Very intresting post. :)
